How to Care for your Teddy Bear Magnolia

The sight of a Teddy Bear Magnolia in full bloom is a beautiful experience. These magnificent blooms appear in shades of white, pink, and purple and can add a stunning focal point to any garden. But taking care of your magnolia is no small feat—so let’s explore the best ways to ensure that your teddy bear magnolia thrives for years to come.

Sunlight Requirements
Teddy Bear Magnolias need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day in order to thrive. If you live in an area with hot summers, you should plant your tree where it will receive some afternoon shade; this will help protect the delicate flowers from wilting too quickly due to heat stress. On the other hand, if you live in an area with cooler winters, planting your tree in full sun is recommended as this exposure helps prevent frost damage.

Watering Needs
Teddy bear magnolias prefer moist soil but not soggy or waterlogged soil—so watering regularly is essential for keeping your tree healthy. During its first year after planting, your tree should be watered about once per week (more often during periods of high temperatures and/or drought). After that initial growing season has passed, you can reduce watering frequency to every 2-3 weeks unless there are periods of extreme heat or drought.

Pruning and Fertilising
Your Teddy Bear Magnolia should be pruned twice per year: once in late winter/early spring and again right after flowering ends in early summer. Pruning helps keep your tree healthy by allowing air and light into the branches which encourages growth. Do not prune more than 25% of the branches as this can cause excessive shock and lead to death or poor health for your tree. As far as fertilising goes, a slow-release fertiliser applied bi-annually should be sufficient for keeping your tree happy and healthy!

Taking care of a Teddy Bear Magnolia requires patience and dedication but the reward is worth it. With proper sunlight requirements, regular watering practices, pruning twice yearly, and fertilisation - you can enjoy beautiful blooms from your gorgeous teddy bear magnolia for years to come.
